HRM as a means to enhance employee well-being and promote mental health in the workplace.

Human Resource Management (HRM) is crucial for efficiently overseeing an organization's employees and achieving its strategic objectives. As the business environment evolves, new theories in HRM offer fresh perspectives and strategies to effectively assist employees and improve organizational performance. By understanding and implementing these theories, companies can create workplaces that are more dynamic, responsive, and insightful.

The well-being and mental health of employees have emerged as crucial elements of a flourishing company. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that depression and anxiety result in a loss of around $1 trillion per year in productivity for the global economy. As a result, numerous firms are prioritizing mental health initiatives in order to cultivate a healthy and efficient work environment. This blog delves into the importance of mental health and well-being in the workplace, the challenges encountered, and approaches to implementing excellent human resource management techniques.

Understanding mental health and well-being

Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, which influences how we think, feel, and act. Employee well-being comprises several facets of physical, mental, and social health, which collectively contribute to overall life satisfaction and optimal performance in the workplace. In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of the influence of mental health on workplace dynamics, leading firms to incorporate well-being into their human resource management strategies.

Theoretical framework

Multiple perspectives provide valuable understanding regarding the significance of mental health and well-being in the workplace. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs highlights the importance of fulfilling psychological security requirements for total well-being. In addition, the World Health Organization's guidelines on mental health in the workplace provide a comprehensive view of the most effective methods for fostering mental well-being on a worldwide scale.

It's crucial to prioritize employee well-being and mental health.

“People’s mental wellbeing has been worsening. In the last 10 years the number of people expressing stress, sadness, anxiety, anger or worry has been on the rise, reaching its highest levels since the Gallup surveys began.”

- 2023/2024 Human Development Report, United Nations Development Program

1. Employee Productivity: Mental health has a substantial impact on an individual's productivity. Employees who are facing mental health challenges are more prone to reduced productivity, higher rates of absence, and diminished job satisfaction.

2. Supporting employees' mental health positively influences their engagement and retention. According to Gallup, employees who believe that their company is concerned about their well-being exhibit a 38% higher level of engagement.

3. Prioritizing mental health fosters a positive business culture characterized by people feeling respected and supported. This can result in increased morale and a more unified work atmosphere.

4. Case Studies: Prominent companies such as Google and Microsoft have effectively implemented mental health initiatives.

- Google provides on-site wellness centers and mental health tools; it also provides employees with "mental health days," and Google's Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) provide confidential counseling, stress management resources, and support for employees dealing with personal or professional challenges, which leads to increased employee satisfaction and productivity.

- Microsoft provides dedicated mental health leave and mental health training for managers, equipping them with the skills to recognize signs of mental health issues, offer support, and foster a psychologically safe work environment; provides employees with access to digital tools for meditation, therapy, and stress management; and, by recognizing the importance of work-life balance, offers flexible work arrangements, including remote work options and flexible hours, to help employees manage their personal and professional lives effectively.

Challenges and limitations

Work-life balance and flexibility are the primary factors leading to employee exits, according to a comprehensive Gallup survey among Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs), HR professionals, and a representative sample of the U.S. workforce. Higher salary and career development opportunities closely follow these. The research elucidates the difficulties encountered by workers and emphasizes the necessity of taking proactive steps to promote mental well-being through the analysis of different viewpoints. When questioned about the causes of employee departures, 44% of Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs) recognized work-life balance and flexibility as a prevalent issue, placing third after greater salary (77%) and career advancement (76%). These findings suggest that in order to retain skilled employees, firms should prioritize the establishment of work environments that facilitate a harmonious balance between work and personal life. In addition, 93% of Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs) stated that they offer easily available mental health support services.

1. Stigma: The main barrier is the negative perception and discrimination associated with mental health problems. Apprehension or concern about evaluation or negative consequences may deter employees from seeking assistance.

2. Resource Allocation: Ensuring sufficient resources for mental health programs might pose difficulties, particularly for smaller organizations. Ensuring fiscal equilibrium while delivering efficient assistance is a crucial consideration.

3. Addressing global challenges in promoting mental health requires navigating diverse cultural attitudes and legal systems. In one country, the effectiveness of a certain method may not be transferable to another, necessitating the use of customized strategies.

Effective strategies for Human Resource Management (HRM) practices are crucial.

1. Leadership commitment: Leaders must demonstrate a strong dedication to advocating for mental health. This includes demonstrating constructive actions and actively supporting the availability of mental health services.

2. Training and Development: Providing training to managers and staff regarding mental health awareness and support helps to foster a more empathetic and helpful workplace.

3. Policy and Practice: Implementing explicit policies that support mental well-being, such as offering flexible work schedules, providing access to counseling services, and allowing for mental health leave, can have a substantial impact.

4. Evaluating Impact: Consistent evaluations and metrics used to gauge the performance of mental health initiatives are crucial in ensuring their success and informing potential enhancements.

We anticipate significant advancements in mental health and well-being in the future

1. Technological advancements are critical to the progress of mental health assistance. This is evident in the development of AI-powered mental health applications and teletherapy services.

Organizations will transform their approach to promoting employee well-being by integrating technology into their workplace support systems for mental health. Companies may provide comprehensive and individualized support to their employees via artificial intelligence (AI), wearable technology, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), telehealth and e-channeling services, and personalized well-being plans. As these technologies progress, the possibility of creating healthier and more efficient work environments becomes more attainable.

2. Global movements such as #MeToo and Times Up are influencing mental health practices by focusing on inclusivity and psychological well-being in the workplace.

3. There is a growing recognition of the connection between mental health and sustainability, underscoring the importance of social sustainability in business operations.

In conclusion,

Healthy mental health and well-being are vital elements of a productive and positive work environment. Organizations can foster supportive and appreciative cultures for employees by tackling obstacles and employing efficient HRM methods. With the increasing emphasis on mental health, it is crucial for HR professionals to remain dedicated to cultivating a culture that promotes well-being.

I totally agree with the well being of employees and their mental health. I have a personal experience in how banks handle this as one of stressful jobs in nowadays. My previous employer had counselling sessions for employees who are in need and requested. The same will be very confidential and doing by professional counselors.
Other than that, even my current employer is also providing Yoga sessions, Zumba sessions, awareness sessions for mental well-being for employees.
They invest more in well-being of employees because organizational success and customer satisfaction is also depend on employee satisfaction

    1. Thank you Sewwandi for your insightful comment! I'm glad that the blog's emphasis on HRM's role in improving employee well-being and mental health impacted an emotional connection with employees. Leadership commitment and flexible work practices are crucial initiatives, and it is promising to observe leading companies such as Google and Microsoft establishing an example for others.

Your curiosity about the implementation of the same strategies by smaller organizations with fewer resources is important. Although smaller organizations may lack the same resources, but they can still have a huge impact by focusing on specific important areas. When companies fail to provide the resources and foundation employees need to thrive, then overall performance will drop. Employees will be less engaged, have lower productivity, and likely turn in subpar performances. They will miss work more often, make poor decisions, and can even become safety liabilities.

Hence, implementing strategies such as fostering a culture that encourages open communication with your employees through frequent one-on-one conversations and check-ins, offering flexible work arrangements, and providing affordable or community-based mental health resources can gain more positive results. Furthermore, leaders' genuine commitment to their employees' well-being has the potential to promote important change, even in smaller contexts.

Thank you for raising this important topic. I think this discussion will encourage all companies to promote employee mental health and well-being.
