Stress management in HRM is crucial for many reasons. 

First, it is a preventative measure. Management of stress can prevent potential issues such as employee absenteeism, low productivity, high turnover rates and maybe even death by suicide.

Second, it is an investment. By investing in stress management, you’re investing in your employees’ well-being. This will lead to a happier and much healthier work place which will be more productive and have lower absenteeism and turnover rates.

As the workforce continues to become more fast-paced and demanding, employers need to recognize the importance of stress management in HRM. Unfortunately, many businesses fail to see the link between employee productivity and stress levels.

Work-related stress may arise when employees  have presented with work demands and pressures that are not matched to their knowledge and abilities and which challenge their ability to cope. It may occur in different work situations, but will becomes worse when employees feel little support from supervisors and coworkers, as well as limited control over the work processes.

Some employers assume that stressful working conditions are a necessary to turn up the pressure on workers and they set aside health concerns to remain productive and profitable in their business. But... Implementing stress management strategies may not only benefiting employee health. It's positive outcomes will affect in overall organizational performances too.

  • Interpersonal Relationships. Poor social environment and lack of support or help from coworkers and supervisors.

However, it’s also true that people who are feeling stressed may also have characteristics that use these feelings to their advantage, including being high-achieving, organized and driven. The difference relies on understanding how managers are supporting and prioritizing stress management.

Work-related stress can lead to feel employees frustrated. Frustration, and increased stress due to deadlines, targets, and expectations from coworkers and customers. Stress can manifest as physical symptoms like aches, pains, and headaches, as well as anxiety and nervousness, disrupting learning and working practices. Managing stress is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and with the right approach (Example: Stress management training or wellness programs), the effects of stress can become less distracting.   • Ensure that the workload is in line with employees’ capabilities and available resources.
  • Design jobs to provide meaning, stimulation, and opportunities for employees to use their skills.
  • Clearly define employees’ roles and responsibilities.
  • Give employees more opportunities to participate in decisions and actions affecting their jobs.
  • Improve communications-reduce uncertainty about career development and future employment prospects.
  • Provide opportunities for social interaction among employees.
  • Establish work schedules that are compatible with demands and responsibilities outside the job.
  • Implement organizational rules and policies which are supporting employees work-life balance.
  • Organizing work-stress management training programs and consultation services

Apart from those steps employers can organize stress prevention programs which include the followings;

  • Building general awareness about job stress
  • Securing top management commitment and support for the program
  • Incorporating employee input and involvement in all phases of the program
  • Establishing the technical capacity to conduct the program (e.g., specialized training for in-house staff or use of job stress consultants)
